The verdict
Buy for the multi-platform player who wants useful control without a base station
The Nova 5X is an unusually complete midrange gift: comfortable at 265 g, clear enough for competitive cues, easy to retune from a phone and capable of moving from Xbox to nearly every other common gaming system. Its 60-hour headline battery and retractable mic make it practical. Skip it when active noise cancellation, premium music fidelity, simultaneous game-and-phone mixing or instant swapping without moving a dongle is essential.
Why it works
- ✓ The edition-specific 5X dongle supports Xbox as well as PC, PlayStation, Switch and many USB-C devices
- ✓ The mobile companion app can change game-specific EQ without leaving a console session
- ✓ Up to 60 hours of 2.4GHz use and a claimed six hours from a 15-minute charge reduce interruptions
Tradeoffs
- × Quick-Switch selects 2.4GHz or Bluetooth; it does not mix both sources simultaneously like Nova 7
- × The mostly plastic build feels lighter rather than luxurious, and there is no active noise cancellation
- × Console ChatMix support varies: the 5X dial works with Xbox, while PlayStation does not expose the same mixing control
The letter after 5 changes what the dongle can do
- Edition: buy Arctis Nova 5X Wireless for Xbox compatibility. The regular 5 and PlayStation-focused 5P are not equivalent Xbox headsets.
- Switch position: the 5X transmitter has an Xbox mode and a USB mode. Use USB for PC, PlayStation and other supported devices; follow the manual rather than assuming one setting fits all.
- Source behaviour: Bluetooth is convenient for calls and mobile listening, but Quick-Switch changes sources instead of playing phone and game audio together.
- Fit: the elastic suspension band and retractable mic are convenient, but ear shape, glasses and head size remain personal. Buy from a seller with clear returns if it cannot be tried first.
What should come with Nova 5X Wireless
| Decision | Included | Not included |
|---|---|---|
| Wireless kit | Arctis Nova 5X Wireless headset and Xbox-capable compact USB-C wireless dongle | Charging base, spare battery, active noise cancellation or simultaneous dual-source mixing |
| Cables | USB-C-to-USB-A adaptor cable and USB-C charging cable | 3.5 mm analog audio cable, wall charger or extra dongle for every system |
Nova 5X, 5P or Nova 7?
| Decision | Choose Nova 5X | Choose the alternative |
|---|---|---|
| Console mix | Xbox is used now or may be added later alongside other systems | Choose 5P only for its PlayStation-oriented controls and styling when Xbox is irrelevant |
| Phone audio | Switching between game wireless and Bluetooth is enough | Choose Nova 7 when simultaneous 2.4GHz game audio and Bluetooth matter |
| Premium features | Long battery, presets and a light headset are the priorities | Choose Nova Pro Wireless for ANC, hot-swappable batteries and a control base—at much higher cost |
Quick answers before gifting
Does Nova 5X work on both Xbox and PS5?
Yes, using the 5X USB-C transmitter in its appropriate mode. Xbox uses the Xbox setting; PlayStation uses USB mode. PlayStation does not provide the same hardware ChatMix behaviour as Xbox.
Can game and Bluetooth audio play together?
No. The dedicated Quick-Switch button makes changing between 2.4GHz and Bluetooth easy, but Nova 5 does not provide the simultaneous dual-wireless mixing found on Nova 7.
Do the game presets work on consoles?
Yes. Select and save a supported preset through the Arctis Companion mobile app while the headset is connected; availability and tuning can change as the app's library evolves.
Is the microphone removable?
It retracts into the earcup rather than detaching. The bidirectional ClearCast 2.X mic can be muted from the headset and uses software noise reduction where supported.
Can the USB-C dongle block another port?
It can on tightly spaced hardware. The included USB-A adaptor cable helps move the transmitter away from adjacent ports; check the recipient's console, dock or handheld layout.
