Friendly family game
One steal per gift and no immediate steal-backs.
Simple White Elephant rules
Players take turns opening wrapped gifts or stealing gifts that are already open. Agree on the budget, steal limit, and final-swap rule before you start; everything else becomes easy.
Every player brings one wrapped gift within the agreed budget.
Draw numbers to set the turn order.
Player 1 chooses and opens any wrapped gift.
Each later player either opens a wrapped gift or steals an opened gift.
If your gift is stolen, immediately open a new gift or steal an eligible opened gift.
A gift freezes after its agreed steal limit—three steals is the common default.
The game ends when every gift is open and the final turn or optional Player 1 swap is resolved.
The person who lost the gift takes the next action immediately. They may open a wrapped gift or steal another eligible gift, but normally cannot steal back the gift just taken.
Choose before the gifts reach the table.
One steal per gift and no immediate steal-backs.
Three steals freeze a gift; Player 1 gets the final option.
Add a per-turn timer and end every steal chain after three moves.
$20–$30 is common, but the right amount is whatever every player can comfortably afford. Put it in the invitation.
Yes, on different turns, until that gift reaches the agreed steal limit. Immediate steal-backs are normally prohibited.
The names often describe the same open-or-steal game, although families may use different final-swap or steal-limit rules.
Choose something broadly useful, funny without embarrassing anyone, and easy for several people in the room to want.
