Direct-drive racing gift guide

A smoother first direct-drive setup—when the furniture can take it

The T598 PlayStation/PC bundle replaces gears and belts with Thrustmaster's Direct Axial Drive motor, delivering 5 Nm of sustained torque, rapid transient effects and a cog-free steering feel. It includes the base, detachable 30 cm wheel and two metal pedals, but it is not a plug-and-forget toy. A rigid mounting surface, current firmware and careful per-game settings determine whether that force becomes useful road detail or a shaking desk.

The verdict

Buy for the PlayStation racer ready to build around direct drive

T598 is a compelling first serious wheel for Gran Turismo, F1 and supported PC sims because its smooth motor exposes detail that entry gear-driven wheels blur. The ecosystem can grow through alternate rims, shifters and better pedals. It is a poor surprise gift for an Xbox player, a living room without permanent storage, a flimsy glass desk or someone expecting a clutch and load-cell brake in the starter box.

Why it works

  • Smooth 5 Nm constant torque provides a meaningful step beyond entry-level gear and hybrid drive systems
  • The base display stores profiles and exposes useful settings without requiring a PC during PlayStation use
  • A detachable rim and Thrustmaster add-on ecosystem make the initial bundle upgradeable

Tradeoffs

  • × The included Raceline LTE pedal set has only accelerator and brake; clutch and load-cell braking cost extra
  • × The large wheelbase needs a strong desk, supplied clamp or compatible cockpit and space for its external power hardware
  • × Game support and display effects vary, and firmware updates require a Windows PC even for PlayStation owners

Measure twice, then update before driving

  • Platform: confirm the PlayStation/PC T598 with licensed console controls. The newer Xbox/PC version is a separate product; neither console version works natively on the other console family.
  • Mount: measure desk thickness, knee clearance, monitor distance and storage. Direct-drive torque should feed into a rigid frame, not flexing furniture or a loose tabletop.
  • Firmware: use a compatible Windows PC to install the latest official package for both base and connected components before tuning games or judging compatibility.
  • Game profile: check Thrustmaster's current supported-title list and recommended mode. Older games may use backward-compatibility modes and expose fewer dashboard or high-frequency effects.

Quick answers before gifting

Does the PlayStation T598 work on Xbox?

No native Xbox support is listed for this version. Thrustmaster sells a distinct Xbox/PC T598 system. Match the licensed console version to the recipient rather than relying on third-party adaptors.

Does it include a clutch pedal?

No. The Raceline Pedals LTE set starts with accelerator and brake. It can be expanded within the supported ecosystem, or replaced with a compatible three-pedal/load-cell solution.

Is 5 Nm safe on a desk?

Only on a strong, stable surface with the official mount correctly tightened and conservative settings. Keep children and loose cables away, never place hands through the rim, and power down before changing hardware.

Will every racing game use all its effects?

No. Basic force feedback, native device detection, dashboard data, Gear Jolt and high-frequency Harmony effects depend on the title, platform, SDK and current firmware. Check exact games before buying.

Can older Thrustmaster rims fit?

Many current and legacy add-on rims can be used through Thrustmaster's quick-release ecosystem, sometimes with an adaptor or reduced feature support. Verify each exact rim on the official compatibility table.
