This is not really a present for the cat. It is a present for the person who has scooped the same box thousands of times and would very much like that part of cat ownership automated.
The verdict
Litter-Robot 4 is worth considering when daily scooping is the actual problem and the recipient already wants an automatic box. It handles the repetitive sift, tracks useful basics and remains cheaper than the newer LR5. The gamble is unusually physical: the cat must adopt it, the room must fit it, and somebody still has to empty and clean it.

No proprietary litter is required. Whisker says most clumping or scoopable litters work, including small crystals that pass through the screen. Non-clumping, loose-clumping, newspaper and absorbent wood-pellet litters do not.
Only kittens weighing at least 3 lb should use automatic mode. Below that weight, Whisker recommends leaving the unit off and running a supervised manual cycle after the kitten leaves.
It automates the sifting step. The owner still empties the waste drawer, adds litter, cleans the globe and drawer, and keeps the sensors clear. Calling it maintenance-free would oversell it.
It can be if the household has five cats, needs the larger 3–30 lb range, values the larger waste drawer, or wants WasteID and the newer display. For up to four cats where the core goal is automatic sifting and app monitoring, LR4 remains the lower-priced route.
Whisker lists the robot, power supply, fence, five waste-drawer liners and one installed carbon filter. Retail bundles may add mats, OdorTrap packs, litter, accessories or longer coverage, so compare included contents rather than bundle names.
