The verdict
Still compelling for Apple households with a compatible door
Buy the U100 for a homeowner whose existing deadbolt prep matches, who values several independent ways to enter and especially wants Apple Home Key at a mature-model price. Fingerprints and codes cover guests who do not use Apple devices, while a physical cylinder remains available. Skip it for renters without written permission, multipoint or mortise locks, doors that drag or need force to throw the bolt, or buyers who would rather pay more for the newer U400's native Matter-over-Thread and UWB direction.
Why it works
- ✓ Fingerprint, permanent or temporary PIN, Home Key, NFC and physical key avoid one single point of everyday access
- ✓ Home Key can provide fast tap entry from a compatible iPhone or Apple Watch without opening an app
- ✓ The exterior assembly is IP65 rated, and four ordinary AA batteries are easy to replace
Tradeoffs
- × The U100 is a Zigbee/Bluetooth-era lock, not a native Matter-over-Thread device; Matter exposure needs a compatible Aqara hub
- × Remote control, cross-platform automations and complete logs depend on extra hubs, accounts and ecosystem setup
- × Its large exterior keypad is visually prominent, and the motor cannot compensate for a misaligned strike or swollen winter door
Prove the door works smoothly with one finger
- With the door open and closed, turn the existing deadbolt using light pressure. Correct strike alignment, door sag, weatherstrip pressure or seasonal binding before motorizing it.
- Measure a 54mm main bore, 60 or 70mm backset, 35–55mm wooden door thickness and the edge-bore/strike geometry against Aqara's template.
- Confirm this is a replaceable single-cylinder deadbolt—not a mortise case, interconnected handleset, rim lock or multipoint mechanism—and preserve fire/egress requirements.
- Choose the ownership account, administrators, emergency key storage and hub plan before enroling fingerprints, codes or Home Keys.

Quick answers before gifting
Does Aqara U100 need an Aqara hub?
Not for local fingerprint, PIN, NFC, physical key, nearby Bluetooth setup or direct Apple Home pairing/Home Key. A compatible Aqara hub enables remote Aqara functions, richer automations and Matter bridging; the destination ecosystem may also require its own home hub or controller.
Is the U100 a Matter lock?
Not natively. It uses Zigbee and Bluetooth, and compatible Aqara hubs can bridge supported lock functions into Matter. That is different from a lock with Matter over Thread built into the lock itself.
Will it fit every Canadian front door?
No. It targets an American-standard single-cylinder deadbolt in a 35–55mm wooden door with 54mm bore and 60/70mm backset. Door material, trim interference, bore position, strike and egress rules still need checking.
What happens when the batteries die?
Replace the four AA cells before low-battery warnings become urgent. Keep the supplied mechanical key securely accessible outside the locked premises, and learn the manual's emergency-power procedure before relying on it.
Can tenants install it?
Only with the property owner's written permission and a plan for keys, restoration, insurance and emergency access. A smart lock changes a security and egress component, not merely decor.
